How to Update Your Wardrobe on a Budget

We’re all looking for ways to save money and consume in a way that’s more sustainable, and one way to do that is to commit to a clothing budget and stick to it. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun with fashion! Here are some of our favorite ways to update your wardrobe on a budget.

Shop the clearance rack first

It might be tempting to check out all the latest new fashions at the front of the store, but if you’re willing to do a little digging through the clearance racks, you can save some money and maybe find something you missed the first time around.

Aim for ‘slow’ fashion

Hold onto those pieces in your wardrobe that will never go out of style, because you can always pair them with a variety of newer items and accessories. Some clothing styles are based on the very latest fashions, and come right off the runway and into stores days later; it’s called fast fashion. Other clothing styles are more timeless, more sustainable, and of better quality, and you can easily keep using them as long as they still fit.

Take stock of what you already have

You may have heard of the phrase, “shop your closet.” Before buying anything new, do an inventory of what you already own, as well as the space you have to hold it. If the drawer that holds all of your sweaters is overflowing, this may be a good opportunity to examine which ones you actually wear.

Shop new, buy used

A brilliant idea when you’re shopping for something specific is to locate the item you want and then check to see if you can find the exact item or a similar one on a secondhand site like Poshmark or Thredup. You can find terrific bargains on gently used clothing in good condition, often still with the tags on them. The sites are user-friendly and provide filtered searching to help you easily find exactly what you’re looking for.

Resell your own clothes

While you’re surfing those consignment and thrift sites, you can list your own clothing for sale and make up some of the difference. Poshmark is especially focused on higher-end name brands, so if you have clothing in great condition from brands such as Nike, J. Crew, Free People, and Lululemon Athletica, you may have a great source for supplementing your wardrobe budget.

Have a swap with friends

Perhaps there’s no better way to shop than in someone else’s closet. Organize a clothing swap get-together with friends, in which everyone brings their unwanted clothing. You might be able to find the perfect top or accessory for something you’ve rarely worn, and you can clear out some needed closet space at the same time.
